Sleep tight with sleep stories
Gabriella Florence | Sports Scientist
For many, some of our fondest memories are of snuggly beds and bedtime stories read by a loved one. No sooner was the book closed, and we were already in dreamland. The good news is that this can continue, even as an adult. Better yet, you don’t need someone to read to you, nor do you need to read anything yourself.
Sleep stories help listeners fall quickly into restful sleep. Unlike novels, sleep stories are devoid of main characters and excitement, as these aren’t always conducive to relaxing your mind for sleep. Often, sleep stories include only sounds, but occasionally a human voice describes your detailed movements through different environments.
Let me give you a sneak peek: close your eyes and imagine walking along the shoreline. Do you hear the waves crashing on the shore and the seagulls flying overhead? Can you feel the warm sand beneath your feet with each step you take?
Don’t worry if you’re not resonating with the beach; close your eyes and explore somewhere else instead, like a beautiful mountain range or a vibrant jungle. The options are endless in the Strove app. From wandering inside the Amazon Jungle or a rocky seashore to exploring Giza or a frozen tundra, you’re bound to find something you enjoy.
Do sleep stories really work?
Yes. Besides being pleasant to listen to, an academic review reported the following benefits:
Faster time to fall asleep (shorter sleep latency)
Improved ability to remain asleep
Improved sleep quality
Deeper sleep throughout the night
What about reading a book?
Research has highlighted the effectiveness of bedtime reading in improving sleep quality. However, some key differences may make sleep stories preferential for a good night’s sleep. For example:
You can switch off the light while listening to a sleep story.
Listening to sleep stories in a dark room enhances the release of melatonin to signal to your brain that it’s time for sleep.
Sleep stories have no specific climax, so you can doze off anytime without missing a crucial part.
You don’t need to focus while listening to sleep stories. Let your mind relax while wandering the environment.
Sleep stories can help you transition from a busy day to a place of calmness.
Remember, with better sleep comes a better day. Sleep tight (wherever your sleep story takes you).
