Looking for a quick, energising snack that satisfies your sweet tooth while giving you a boost of caffeine? Try Chocolate-Coated Coffee Beans! This simple treat combines the rich flavours of chocolate and coffee in a convenient, bite-sized form, perfect for keeping you focused and alert at work. These are perfect for 20 minutes before that crucial meeting or lunchtime workout.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of high-quality coffee beans (choose medium to dark roast for a fuller flavour)

  • 1 cup of dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher)

  • Optional: sea salt or chilli flakes for added flavour

Instructions:

  1. Melt the chocolate: In a double boiler or microwave, gently melt the dark chocolate, stirring occasionally to avoid burning. If using a microwave, heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth.

  2. Coat the coffee beans: Add the coffee beans to the melted chocolate and stir until they’re evenly coated.

  3. Set the beans: Use a fork or spoon to scoop the chocolate-coated beans out of the bowl, allowing any excess chocolate to drip off. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  4. Chill and enjoy: Pop the tray into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, or until the chocolate hardens. Once set they are ready to be enjoyed. Portion them out for a quick, on-the-go snack.

  5. Store for later: Keep your chocolate-coated coffee beans in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge, depending on your preference. They’ll stay fresh for up to two weeks.

A workplace snack with a purpose

Moderation is Key: While chocolate-coated coffee beans are a delicious and energising snack, it’s important to be mindful of caffeine consumption. Each bean packs a punch, as you’re consuming whole coffee beans rather than brewed coffee. Moderate your intake to avoid jitters or crashing later in the day. Aim for a few beans at a time, pairing them with water or a light snack to maintain balance. 8 coffee beans equates to about the same caffeine content of a cup of coffee.

Focus Boost: The combination of caffeine from coffee and the antioxidants from dark chocolate can enhance focus and improve productivity, especially during that afternoon slump. Dark chocolate also contains theobromine, which can provide a gentle, sustained energy boost without the spikes that come from sugar-heavy snacks.

A Nutritional Perspective: Beyond the energy boost, choosing dark chocolate adds some health benefits. Dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher) is known for its rich antioxidant content, which may support cognitive function and improve blood flow. However, chocolate is still a treat, so enjoy in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

Balance and Breaks: Chocolate-coated coffee beans are a great snack to keep handy during busy workdays, but don’t forget that sustainable energy also comes from a balanced diet, regular movement breaks, and hydration. Pairing this snack with some fresh fruit or nuts can create a more balanced snack experience.

Takeaway: Chocolate-coated coffee beans are a simple, effective workplace snack that provides a quick energy boost. When consumed mindfully, they’re an enjoyable way to beat the midday slump without relying on sugary treats. Enjoy them in moderation, and remember to balance with other healthy snacks and habits for sustained energy throughout the day!
