In a world where you can be anything, be kind

Gabriella Florence | Sports Scientist

It may be the key to a healthier and happier life

Think of a moment when you did something kind for someone else. Let me guess: you’re smiling now, aren’t you? Chances are, if you reminded the recipient, they’d probably start smiling too.

In today's world, it's easy to overlook the importance of simple acts of kindness. While it’s a given that being kind helps others, did you know that it also has profound benefits for you?

What is kindness?

Kindness is the quality of being friendly, selfless, and considerate. It is choosing to do something motivated by genuine intentions, expecting nothing in return.

What are the benefits of being kind?

There is a growing body of research investigating kindness as an intervention. So far, the results have been outstanding and researchers are praising kindness as an openly available, simple, and effective solution to various problems. Let's dive deeper.

Physiological benefits

According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, engaging in acts of kindness produces endorphins (our bodies’ natural painkillers’), reduces cortisol (stress hormone), lowers blood pressure, and eases symptoms of anxiety. There are also several studies suggesting that kindness can help us live longer.

Psychological and social benefits

One study showed that acts of kindness enhanced a sense of belonging and reduced feelings of loneliness. Another study reported increased mental, social, and emotional wellbeing scores. Kindness even has a positive impact on our self-esteem. When we perform acts of kindness, we feel good about ourselves, which boosts our self-confidence and self-worth, leading to a more positive self-image.

Plus, kindness is contagious. Your one kind deed can start a kindness chain-reaction, contributing to a happier, healthier, and more compassionate society.

Tips to add kindness to your day

The do’s

There are many ways to be kind without setting aside hours of your time or spending a fortune of money. Go through the Strove Team’s 10 suggestions below.

1. Phone a friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while or send them a check-in message.

2. Pay for a stranger’s coffee.

3. Volunteer at an organisation or donate to a charity.

4. Greet people with a smile as you walk by and wish them a good day ahead.

5. Send flowers or chocolates to a friend for the sake of it.

6. Acknowledge effort and give praise for a job well done.

7. Offer to make your colleague a cup of coffee or tea when you’re making for yourself.

8. Give someone a compliment out of the blue.

9. Add an extra tip for your waiter, beautician, or barista.

10. Don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Do something that makes you happy.

The don’ts

1. Don’t spend above your means. If you can’t donate financially, donate your time or expertise instead.

2. Be careful how you compliment, especially when it relates to weight loss or weight gain.

3. Refrain from publicising your kind deed. In fact, sharing your act to seek validation or praise from others won’t make it any sweeter. Instead, choose to praise yourself internally.

Remember, be kind and modest to make the world a better place, one good deed at a time.
